Project 365 #9 – Cluck Cluck!

I was struggling for ideas today when Antonia suggested using some of our ornaments as subjects. I chose this pair of nodding chickens that my parents got us.

I tried a bunch of different setups before settling on this one, in particular I tried both bouncing a flash and just available light. In the end I settled on this setup: I positioned an orange table lamp (with a very diffusing shade) to the right, and a reflector (just a white piece of card) to the back-left to help even up the lighting and soften the shadows. You can actually see the reflector a little on the left hand side of the left chicken.

The light was pretty dim, so I set up my tripod to give me a really low ISO and free me up to hold the reflector (I used my remote to trigger the shutter). At an aperture of f/3.5 this 50mm prime is at its sweet spot for sharpness; definitely check out the full view and zoom in. It’s easy to forget this lens is just £80. You can even see how little we dust our ornaments.

I took loads of shots but as always even when you find one you like there’s still something you wish you could change. I’m unhappy with how the chicken on the right has got cut off. Oh well, you can’t have everything (and I’m too lazy to go and set it back up).

Lens: 50mm f/1.8 II
Focal length: 50mm
Aperture: f/3.5
Shutter speed: 0.3 sec
ISO: 100
