Project 365 #10 – Derek

I can’t believe I’ve gone 10 days without a pet photo.

This is Derek our (female) cat. I was actually taking photos of Antonia’s DS/3DS game collection but she was sitting very still watching me, so I thought I’d get some photos of her too.

The problem with shots of Derek is they always look underexposed because she’s so dark. In fact, it’s difficult taking photos of black cats in general. This one wasn’t so bad, but even now I’m wondering if I should have dialled the exposure up a notch, bah.

I had my tripod set up and initially just took shots without my flash, but then I tried using the flash on just a low setting bounced at the ceiling and that really helped define Derek’s features and provide a bit of backlight. I then post-processed in Lightroom to boost exposure and dynamic range.

Let me know what you think 🙂
